Follow-up Comment #12, bug #29447 (project octave):

I would say that in Matlab 99.9% of invalid handles come into existence as
callbacks while using GUIDE to mock up a GUI before/while implementing the
backend code. If the handles were broken from creation, the way GUIDE works
would be fairly impossible.
