Actually the subplot command in octave misses two options comparing it with
ML: 'align' and 'replace'
Interestingly, what we see in this bug is that Octave behaves like ML but
with both this options enabled. That means, octave's subplot(r,c,n)
corresponds to ML's subplot(r,c,n, 'align', replace') which causes axis labels
to overlap.
