Follow-up Comment #25, bug #31974 (project octave):
If we're betting, I think lazily creating and destroying the real and
imaginary parts would be a very easy optimization for them.
Perhaps you're right though that Matlab's coders wouldn't have stumbled onto
this, but I guess they have had 40+ years... maybe they didn't even
intentionally do it and their JIT is just that good(TM) and comes up with it
on its own ;)
