Follow-up Comment #31, bug #31468 (project octave):

I don't think you want to do "char (value)".  It would make more sense to
convert numbers to strings using num2str or sprintf or something like that.

I think you want the "string" property to be stored as a string or a cellstr,
but not as a numeric object or a cell array containing anything other than
character strings.  Then the internals can always assume that the string
property is really a string or cellstr object, which simplifies things there.

If someone gives a numeric object or a cell array containing something other
than character strings, it would be fine with me to throw an error, but you
might want to see what Matlab does if you care about compatibility.
