Follow-up Comment #3:
I've added support for the FFF format string to Octave in this changeset
(http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/40e32fe44aaa). To see the fix
you will need to build from the Mercurial archive or wait for the 3.6.0
release scheduled for December 2011.
