Follow-up Comment #13, bug #33523 (project octave):

I agree with Rik.  Except, this is more than a "slight"
philosophical difference.  It is an important point of
principle.  I think that all functions should validate
their arguments based on the documented specification.
(It would be very nice if this could be automatied.)

It is a lot better for users to learn right away that they
have made an invalid call, rather than, as in this case,
that they assume that something went wrong in the function...

It is not appropriate to use Matlab compatibility as
an argument against this.
