Follow-up Comment #5:

Did you use the NSIS installer from MXE octave for version 4.1.0+.  This will
install to a path without spaces which fixes both point 2 and point 5 for me. 
I can print FLTK plot out of the GUI without problem using the ghostscript
that is shipped with Octave.
