Follow-up Comment #20, bug #48307 (project octave):

Marco, in comment #18 you suggested avoiding calculating  pi*x.  I don't think
that will help in general.  The problem is the lack of precision in x, isn't
it?

If you think this bug is worth further discussion, feel free to reopen it. 
Your comment #8 convinced me that the problem is in the lack of precision in
the input, which is insurmountable.
