Follow-up Comment #64, bug #44916 (project octave):

@JohnD: I think both of your suggestions in comment #56 are good ideas:

1) A --softwareopengl option to octave at the command line.
2) A function opengl to get information about the current installation.

At least for 4.2, I think option 2 is required.  We need more information
before we can debug these reports.  Consider also, if possible, whether you
can get information about OSMESA since that seems also to be important.

This bug can stay a blocker until the opengl() function is written, and then
downgraded.
