In the results of your first attempt there two types of problems. One is
missing functions, that hopefully should be solved now by configure checks.
The other one is related 1.x/2.x API changes, and should still be here.
Could you please try again on Ubutun 14.04 with the latest dev version of the
gsl package (just clone the OF hg repo and use "make dist" to produce a
tarball)? It would give an indication of the amount of work required to
support GSL 1.16.
