Follow-up Comment #1, bug #49987 (project octave):
Reproduced with Debians Octave 3.8.2, with currently no clue from gdb why
octave_value.string_value() shouldn't have worked. With Octave 4.0.0 and
current 4.3.0+ (2017-01-03, 53bb781d70c0) I get segfaults at dlopen time with
a weird, possibly corrupted backtrace. I suspect a poorly reproducible bug in
initialization of globals, possibly indirectly causing the original issue of
this report. I'm at work on it.
