Follow-up Comment #4:

I created a quick m-file version of hgtransform.m on the development branch of
Octave (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/aaf91b4f48e4).  It seems
to work pretty well.  Since it is just an m-file you can download it and use
it as is.
