Thanks for the confirmation, Rik.

Just to clarify what I observe, as it seems to slightly differ from you:
* if the Octave GUI is running, I see the figure being closed and and the GUI
is unresponsive (I cannot access the command line) and has to be killed .
* if the Octave GUI is not running (--no-gui), the figure is closed but the
command line still works. The handle of the figure is still returned by get
(0, "children") and I can close () it.

It is indeed only with Qt as modal windows are only implemented there
following bug #48160. Unless there is an easy fix, it might be better to
disable the patch in the meantime as it's better to have a non-modal window
than a frozen GUI.
