Thanks for your bug report. I can confirm this, it looks like a slightly
different manifestation of bug #48031.

foo is the user-defined function defined from: /tmp/foo.m

exist x

>> clear all
>> exist = 1;
>> foo
parse error near line 1 of file /tmp/foo.m

  syntax error

>>> exist x
          ^
