Follow-up Comment #6, bug #52479 (project octave):

Aside from the larger architectural issues around strread and textscan, is the
patch in comment #2 good enough to resolve this bug?  I can review for style
and commit if it is.

As for tests, there are already a bunch of tests for textscan in the file
file-io.cc.  Try


test file-io.cc


to run them.
