@Pantxo: Awesome, that was quick work.  I applied the patch to the stable
branch here (http://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/708b98b4cdd1).

This will be a part of the 4.2.2 bug fix release expected by the end of the
year.
