Follow-up Comment #5, bug #52647 (project octave):

I am providing here examples from 2017b for the purpose of test units. They
mainly cover the logic for trailing whitespace (must be kept) and for
overlapping matches.

  0x0 empty char array

>> erase ('ababa', 'aba')

ans =


>> erase ('abababa', 'aba')

ans =


>> erase ('ababababa', 'aba')

ans =


>> erase ('ababababa', {'aba', 'bba'})
