It appears that Matlab may have changed their precedence order when there are
multiple matches for a name.  According to Octave's documentation, the
precedence order is

variable, built-in function, oct-file, directory, file, class.

It would appear from Matlab's documentation that the new order is

variable, directory, built-in function, oct-file, file, class.

This should be tested, perhas with a mex file "abc.mex" and a directory "abc"
in the current directory and then executing 

x = exist ('abc')

to see the return code.
