Follow-up Comment #21, bug #52775 (project octave):

Ok, I've tested this a little on Ubuntu 14.04 and I can confirm I can't build
either the octave.info or octave.html formats of the manual with Texinfo 5.2.
I can build octave.dvi, octave.pdf, and octave.ps.

I think the texinfo.tex auxiliary file is only used with the TeX rendered
output formats (DVI, PS, and PDF), but Texinfo itself handles the macros to
produce the Info and HTML output formats.

The codequoteundirected macro works with Texinfo 5.2, but the sortas macro was
only introduced in Texinfo 6.1, and that is the fatal error that I get on
Ubuntu 14.04.

I would still like to be able to support building on Ubuntu 14.04, which means
Texinfo 5, but I don't see a nice way around this.
