Follow-up Comment #13, bug #53520 (project octave):
Thinking about the uploaded pics, it's intruiging that apparently the
JAVA_VERSION environment setting only changes the version but not the rest of
the registry key name:
in comment #12 in the verbatim block, the registry key name of the Java 8
setting is shown (...\java runtime environment\...) so somehow the code picks
that up, instead of ...\jre\... for Java 9.
