Follow-up Comment #7, bug #53654 (project octave): I don't think there's anything wrong with respect to the shadowing warning. When you start octave with ./run-octave, it is passing the '--no-init-path' option and the '--path=$dirs' option. When Octave starts with no initial path (--no-init-path), then nothing will produce the shadowing warning.
