Follow-up Comment #36, bug #53737 (project octave):

This has been fixed in gnuplot.  The font name pointer was not being
initialized unless there was complete success with the options.  Hence, this
was a random fail depending on what ones memory looked like in the region of
that pointer variable.  Thanks for catching this.
