Follow-up Comment #3, bug #45904 (project octave): Here's a temporary work-around (although perhaps it's bad to post a workaround since things might never get fixed at this rate...): the issue is that adjoining (non-single entry) rows or columns which produces potential clashes when you have a row with with symbols and a row which is purely scalar. So, you could...just add a lot of "x-x"s as entries to one of the entries of every row that is purely scalar.
