Follow-up Comment #12, bug #53205 (project octave): I've checked out the default tree from Sourceforge of the signal package and run "test buttord". On my computer passes all the tests ("31 out of 31 test passed"). Later I will check the cheby1ord, cheby2ord and ellipord functions too.
