Follow-up Comment #14, bug #53841 (project octave): The more robust error message is showing that Octave is looking for the help file in /home/octave-4.4.0/doc/interpreter/octave_interpreter.qhc rather than the system directory. How are you running Octave? Either one should do a "make install", in which case launching Octave would simply be "octave --gui &". Otherwise, if it is a local build then one would do something like "<path-to-build-dir>/run-octave --gui &". That "run-octave" sets up the environment properly. But the path above makes no sense to me. /home/octave-4.4.0 would be a user account "octave-4.4.0", not some "directory".
