Follow-up Comment #18, bug #44670 (project octave):
@gyom: I think for compatibility, open.m should be changed to support opening
files on the basis of their extension, as proposed in bug #50543. I can rebase
and finish the patch there, then "openfig.m" is automatically called for
".fig" files and we can add a "openofig.m" file (as a wrapper around your
"openfig.m") that will handle default Octave figure extension. Is it OK?
