Follow-up Comment #3, bug #53873 (project octave): The attached patch adds support for ND character arrays. Also I don't know whether it is always true that upper-case and corresponding lower-case characters (and vice-versa) are represented with the same number of bytes. So I added a fallback for this case. It passes all tests on Linux (Ubuntu 18.04) and Windows 10 (1803) for me.
