Summary: help crashes on topics more than 1 page long

Details:

System: Linux 18.1 (newly installed) on Dell Vostro 3560.
Octave 4.0.0 installed as first application on the system.
Octave CLI works OK, including the HELP command.
Octave GUI help command works ONLY if the text is not paused, ie, it is less
than 1 page of text. For any longer text, the screen pauses with the last
line being:

-- less -- (f)orward, (b)ack, (q)uit

At that point, ENTER causes the display to scroll up without showing any new
text, and all other keypresses are just echoed. The only way to get out of
this state is to kill the program with two Ctrl-C presses. This problem is
not related to the help topic, only to its text length. If the display has to
be paused, it happens every time.

I installed Octave via the Linux Mint software manager, expecting to get 4.4.0
as the latest release, but I see that it has installed 4.0.0. As a Linux
novice I am not inclined to try a manual installation of 4.4.0, unless that is
known to fix this bug.
