Follow-up Comment #48, bug #39000 (project octave):

Caching would, at the very least, be an improvement.

If we neally need to check only for NaN or Inf, then it might be better to do
that directly rather than use the norm.  In that case the loop would be over
N^2 elements, but we could break out as soon as we found the first instance of
a bad value.
