Follow-up Comment #10, bug #54216 (project octave):

I'm thinking of what might happen if someone does a build in the source tree
and then attempts a separate build outside the source tree, possibly without
cleaning up all the generated files in the source tree.

Even if this doesn't cause trouble for the rules in the Makefile, it could
cause confusion because of two copies of generated files.  If it's not too
difficult, I think it would be good to warn about this situation and recommend
a command to use to clean the source tree before running bootstrap, configure,
and make in a separate build tree.
