Follow-up Comment #16, bug #54607 (project octave): I don't know whether this would add more confusion than it would help. At the moment the same codepage is used for displaying and executing m-files (by default). The codepage that is used for executing m-files is defined globally. With these potentially new heuristics for the editor, a user might be confused if their file displays correctly in the editor but seemingly uses different (incorrect) strings on execution.
