Follow-up Comment #1:

Correct, the reporting of function values was always of the opposite sign to
the true value.  I fixed that in a changeset here
(https://hg.savannah.gnu.org/hgweb/octave/rev/da54f14258e1).  The change will
be part of the 5.0 release scheduled for January, 2019.

Marking as fixed and closing report.
