Follow-up Comment #9, bug #55724 (project octave):

The problem might be that MXE Octave's pkgconfig is used to query the
configuration of xkbcommon. But that fails to provide the information for the
host's xkbcommon.

Part of the log/qtbase file reads:

Checking for xkbcommon >= 0.5.0... 
Trying source 0 (type pkgConfig) of library xkbcommon ...
+ pkg-config --exists --silence-errors xkbcommon '>=' 0.5.0
pkg-config did not find package.
  => source produced no result.
test config.qtbase_gui.libraries.xkbcommon FAILED


I have "libxkbcommon-dev" installed.
