Oh. Well, yeah; I did have octave-forge installed with 2.1.46. So thatexplains the difference. I've tried install octave-forge with 2.1.57but I'm getting a lot of errors in both the most recent tar ball and CVSversion. So I may have put a NOINSTALL in one of the directories thatcontains the new random number generator. I'll see if I can get thatinstalled and check if the original problem that motivated me to updatein there first place is still there.
