please do not use gnuplor 4.2.0. and please update to your gnuplot 4.2.2

I have seen similar problema on the octave ML twice and more.

Tese are  not  octave issues but gnuplot issues.

For gnuplot 4.2.0 and octave user, you should update the your gnuplot to 
ver.4.2.2.
If your you are the user gnuplot 4.0, this is not essential.

If you  use the gnuplot 4.2.0 as a octatve graphic backend,
it is highly recommended to updatate your gnuplot to 4.2.2.
