version control for gnulib in the source tree?

Hi,

last time I built octave I found that git was needed to get libgnu. I installed
it and the build went fine. Now this morning I updated the sources and built
again and got the messages below from ./autogen. From previous posts I had the
impression that bootstrap should automatically update libgnu. This does not seem
 to happen in my case. Also I went to the libgnu folder afterwards and typed
"git update" and, indeed, lots of files were updated from git.sv.gnu.org/gnulib.
So is there something wrong or am I just stupid?
