I see that your FT2_CFLAGS, FT2_CONFIG, and FT2_LIBS are all empty.

I'm in unfamiliar territory. You've run configure with options, I ran without any options. I don't know if that makes a difference. Before worrying about that what do you get with ...

       ls /usr/lib/libfreetype*

I get ...

       /usr/lib/libfreetype.a
       /usr/lib/libfreetype.la
       /usr/lib/libfreetype.so
       /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6
       /usr/lib/libfreetype.so.6.3.22
