you modified the test cases, e.g. setting the tolerance to zero. This
works ok with my x86-64, but not for my x86.

This is what I get:

octave-cli:55> x=[0.4 0.6 0.4;0.4 0.0 0.2;0.9 0.7 0.1];
octave-cli:56>  assert (moment (x,2), meansq (center (x)));
error: ASSERT errors for:  assert (moment (x, 2),meansq (center (x)))
