Thanks for the suggestion.
I think this can be applied to the benefit of other packages that won't
install due to this error. Can't remember which ones; there's a short list
(8 pcs) of failing packages included in mxe-octave on the task tracker
(https://savannah.gnu.org/task/?13313, original post), one or two also had
this error.
In the mean time I have replaced the "offending" .mex files in the io
package by .oct files; those work fine. I doubt the io package will ever be
run on Matlab, so I think .mex files have no place in the io pkg anyway.
FYI, io-2.2.4 is on the package release tracker right now.
