This is the first time I’ve had Java work for me. However, I haven’t tried 
since pre Mac OS 10.9.

With 10.9, I was no longer impacted by the cocoa requirement that the GUI run 
on the main thread. Thus, my impression is that this requirement was dropped 
with 10.9.
