I've never configured or looked at FreeType, so I could be totally wrong,
but maybe it's a skew between headers and libraries on your FreeType install?
http://sourceforge.net/project/shownotes.php?release_id=85078 indicates that
there was some renaming of these functions going on around version 2.1.0.
