There is a bugzilla bug filed for this:

There's also a patch there, submitted by yours truly.  It adds a 
checkbox in Apps and Mail and automatically launches the external 
editor if it's checked.  It hasn't been extensively tested yet, but 
it's worked for "normal" activity for me for about a month.  HTH.
