Hi Rinaldi. You need to install automake-1.4, in parallel to your version,
and that should resolve your autogen errors. Just because you have a newer
version doesn't mean it will work for things looking for 1.4.

I thought I'd give the new CVS version a crack, but am unable to build. 
  Here's the problems autogen.sh throws out, and I don't quite 
understand what's happening:
