I have a lot of installation problems with the message files (never had
that before). Here is part of my install output (from within the pkgsrc
framework). This is on NetBSD/amd64 3.0.

radl:/vol1/rhialto/cvs/pkgsrc/news/pan-devel$ sudo make package

and so on with a bunch more, and then later more errors from pkgsrc
since all these files were promised to be installed but weren't.

Building started like this:

===> build-message [pan-0.122] ===> Building for pan-0.122
/usr/bin/make  all-recursive
Making all in po

if cc -DHAVE_CONFIG_H -I. -I. -I..  -I.. -pthread

".deps/uulib.Tpo" ".deps/uulib.Po"; else rm -f ".deps/uulib.Tpo"; exit 1; fi

in other words, nothing was done in the po directory. In 0.121, lots
happened:

===> build-message [pan-0.121] ===> Building for pan-0.121
/usr/bin/make  all-recursive
Making all in po
file=`echo am | sed 's,.*/,,'`.gmo  && rm -f $file &&
/home/tmp/news/pan-devel/work.x86_64/.tools/bin/msgfmt -o $file am.po
file=`echo ar | sed 's,.*/,,'`.gmo  && rm -f $file &&
/home/tmp/news/pan-devel/work.x86_64/.tools/bin/msgfmt -o $file ar.po
file=`echo az | sed 's,.*/,,'`.gmo  && rm -f $file &&
/home/tmp/news/pan-devel/work.x86_64/.tools/bin/msgfmt -o $file az.po
file=`echo bg | sed 's,.*/,,'`.gmo  && rm -f $file &&
/home/tmp/news/pan-devel/work.x86_64/.tools/bin/msgfmt -o $file bg.po
...etc...

Something changed apparently.

I do notice that /usr/bin/make is called, which is of course Berkeley
make. Pan always compiled this way, but maybe in the latest version
something was introduced that isn't Berkeley Make compatible.
