[Pan-users] Are gmime and pcre required during runtime?

They don't seem to be.

I've compiled pan-0.127 on a livecd distro. Configure
asked for gmime and pcre so I compiled and installed
these. Pan compiled fine. gtkspell seems to have
enabled itself according to config.log

When I reboot, I no longer have gmime and pcre
installed, but pan still runs OK.

ldd `which pan` doesn't say anything's missing, just
points at all the gtk2 libs etc.

1. So gmime and pcre only required to build pan, not
to run it? Or will I find certain things (regex
expansion?) won't work properly if gmime and pcre
aren't installed (in which case ldd ought to show
these libs as dependencies and it;s a bug?)

2. The pan binary is quite large (10MB) (no
stripping) - is it possible it has statically linked
in pcre and gmime but the other libs have been
dynamically linked (and, if so, is that ok?)

3. Is it ok to strip this pan binary or will there be
problems?
