Well, in context, that is, offline, requiring the use of a GPS, I took it
to mean "squirrel watching" or "squirrel hunting", much as my dad is a
bird watcher and "birding" can refer to that or bird hunting.

In either case, as with pursuing birds either for the purpose of shooting
them or for the less violent, simply watching, likely photographing them
or putting them on a list (how many different species of birds have I
seen this year, in my life?), it's an activity that could take him all
over an area, to the point that old-style maps and compass, and new-
style satellite location pinpointed mapping-software, would be very
useful.

The interpretation seemed natural enough to me, tho it likely helps
(assuming it's the correct interpretation) that my dad /is/ a bird
watcher, and I've spent many hours riding and hiking with him all over
the countryside and and all over the globe over the years, so I can
easily envision someone using GPS devices in the process (tho my dad
doesn't).
