Oh, thank you, Claudie!  I thought it was only me!
Just to be clear, are you saying that you could not even see 
the headers of messages 3, 4, and 5 in Pan's header pane?  

Here are the Subject lines of the 5 messages in alt.test again:

Subject: mb1
Subject: Re: mb2
Subject: Re: mb3
Subject: Re: mb4
Subject: Re: mb5 fleeb
