You may be better of with a simple USB logic analyser. As a serial signal is a
bit too transient for an (old) scope.
I find the http://www.saleae.com/logic/ one to work splendidly for things like
that.
Though in your case something like a bus pirate
(http://www.sparkfun.com/categories/177) or that logic sniffer further down
the page may already be enough.
