Optional extensions are evil :-)
I will leave the question open for the moment. 
At a much later stage we might try to find a document with a  
<< /FunctionType 0     /Order 3 >> 
gradient with few samples. 
Differences of adjacent pixels would then reveal the type of 
spline.

I will try to provide a complete implementation of pdf function 
objects first.
