eGW was forked after phpGW was a GNU project.  We where a GNU project
for some months before this happened.

They have there views, we have ours.  It really comes down to
licensing, they don't like the GPL.  The code for the most part is
very close,
only becuase the fork happened pretty recently.  I imagine, over time
it will be very different.
